A touchstone was used as an ancient method of determining the purity of gold and silver. In modern times it has also come to mean a tactile object of significance, inspiration and faith, which retains a spiritual association with purity, integrity and value. This modern touchstone design is elegantly engraved in a spiral with the opening verses of Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want..."). The Roman number XXIII is incised on the underside.

The pierced organic form has been adapted from the ancient Chinese pi disc, a symbol of nobility and eternity.
